Fotanian: Fotan Artists Open Studio 2008
First we should take a detour. Once in a public forum on the issues about the West Kowloon Cultural District, a speaker commented the site’s planning lacks accommodation to the basic need of artists, which means there is no hardware store, no stationary store, no woodwork store and no printer located nearby. When artists have to set up an exhibition venue, they will have to do it without any additional supply of tools. It is really troublesome. Art must work hand in hand with those tools of workers. We cannot clone a Picasso out of thin air.
Before the term ‘creative industry’ is becoming a cliché, it is worth an anti-humorous gesture to liven up our language. Creative industry must establish itself in an industrial district, for during the creative process there must include repetitive tasks, from waking up in the morning, breakfast, do some work and then lunch, do some work and then have tea; to a painter’s rhythmic brush stroke, a sculptor’s hammering of chiseled… such repetitive physical work – epitomized during the process of industrial production – does not simply stands as the opposition to creativity, but it is a part of creativity which supports creativity itself. Their relation is not that of mutual dependence, but the former serves as the material support of the later. Therefore creativity is spawn from nuts and bolts, and has little to do with cleanliness.
To make a cultural hub, seems it is more convenient to do it in an industrial district than on a reclamation site. Though we have two studios leaving the scene, but we have 10 new ones just moved in, making up a total of 35 studios, a number enough for spending two weekends.
A thoughtfully designed booklet and leaflet employed the idea of ‘dots and threads’ are available for visitors to smoothly navigate among those industrial complexes. In addition, a book Fontanian: 100Q has been launched to provide a concise review to the past phases of Open Studio (of 2003 and 2005). With all these tools taking you right to their door steps, we sincerely wish you can have a nice weekend with our hard working artists.
